The event had the feel of a big family gathering - just what director/writer/co- producer Stallone Vaiaoga- Ioasa (credited in the film as "SQS") had wanted for the first outing of his debut feature. Three Wise Cousins was meant to be "a film for the people", he told the audience. Watch William Vincent Online Mic on this page. The howls of laughter which filled the following 9.
On his quest to become more Samoan, Adam is put through a Pacific Island- style bootcamp by his cousins Mose (Vito Vito) and Tavita (Vesui Villiamu): he must scale coconut trees barefoot, build an umu and wash his clothes in the river. SUPPLIEDGloria Ofa Blake plays Adam's love interest Mary, who claims to only like "real Island guys". Mose plays bad cop to Tavita's incongruously metrosexual good cop. They are puzzled by their hapless New Zealand cousin, who in turn is not prepared for just how much he will learn from them. The Three Wise Cousins premiere was a momentous occasion for the film about which little had been known beyond a single trailer that slipped quietly on to Facebook in April. Everything about the film - from production to funding and marketing - was done at grassroots level.
For the countless hours of largely unpaid work done by Vaiaoga- Ioasa and his small crew since pre- production began in July 2. SUPPLIEDEighty per cent of the film was shot on location in Samoa over just two weeks. From left: actor Vito Vito (Mose) and director Stallone Vaiaoga- Ioasa on location in Apia. The main cast members are all newcomers to feature film. How I Met Your Mother Season 6 Episode 14 Full.
Vito Vito and Vesui Viliamu, who play Adam's Samoa- based cousins Mose and Tavita, were handpicked for the roles after their appearances on Mr Lavalava, a Survivor/Bachelor- style reality mash- up on TV2's Pacific TV show Fresh. Vaiaoga- Ioasa was so confident in the pair's abilities to play the parts of Adam's goofy life coaches, he didn't bother to audition them: "There's just something about them that an actor cannot bring, you know - you either have it or you don't."Neither is a professional actor: Vito is a cultural entertainer for the Samoa Tourism Authority; Viliamu works at Samoa's Ministry of Education as a network engineer. SUPPLIEDMose (Vito Vito) uses a "Samoan alarm clock" to wake up Adam (Neil Amituanai), who finds it hard to adjusting to the island way of life.
Both jumped at the chance to be involved, but neither anticipated how difficult it would be. The frantic two- week shooting schedule on location in Samoa allowed no time for rest, even in the sweltering afternoon heat."[Filming in] Samoa was hard, but also a blessing because you're stuck there," says Vaiaoga- Ioasa, who got sick halfway through the shoot and had no choice but to battle through. There's no way out, you just have to do it!"For the actors there was also the challenge of filming entirely in English, their second language. SUPPLIEDThe three wise cousins, from left: Vito Vito as Mose, Neil Amituanai as Adam and Vesui Viliamu as Tavita."Not only that, but we are putting ourselves into somebody that is not us," says Vito. To cope, he committed the entire script to memory, thus becoming the de facto script supervisor on set.
Vito and Viliamu's eyes shine with pride when they talk about seeing Three Wise Cousins on the big screen for the first time. They realise the film could make them into celebrities, especially in the Pacific communities, but both claim stardom is no motivator. They are just pleased they can provide for their families with the money they've earned, and can't wait for the public to see the film.
SUPPLIEDVito Vito found acting in English - his second language - a challenge."Every Samoan is related to this movie," says Viliamu."I'm so proud that we had a chance to tell these stories, not only to Samoan people but around the world."Vaiaoga- Ioasa says he has no lofty ambitions of getting the film on to the international festival circuit or breaking box office records. SUPPLIEDThe cast and crew review their work on location in Samoa."I set out to make a film that was entertaining. Whether it has artistic merit or critical [acclaim], it doesn't matter. For me, if an audience, in particular a New Zealand Pacific Island audience, sits in there and doesn't laugh, then I've failed."It is tempting to compare Three Wise Cousins to that other Samoan- Kiwi comedy blockbuster, Sione's Wedding. Cousins, though also hilarious, has a far more earnest quality than the boys- will- be- boys brashness of Sione's. Then there are the budgets.
Sione's Wedding and its lesser- heralded sequel, Sione's 2: Unfinished Business were both made with the backing of South Pacific Pictures and the NZ Film Commission. Vaiaoga- Ioasa's drained his savings account to fund his film in its entirety. SUPPLIEDAdam initially finds Samoan life much tougher than he was prepared for, but ends up learning much more than he anticipated. He won't talk numbers, lest it give "a false sense of what's possible". What he will say is that it took a mammoth effort from his spartan crew to get 8. Samoa in October 2.
The six- person team included his mum and stepdad, operating simultaneously as the catering unit and art department."[My stepfather] he's the real OG [Original Gangster] - he can weave that basket like a sewing machine!"But money ran out during the shoot, forcing Vaiaoga- Ioasa back to Auckland and his day job in television before filming could be completed. By April, Three Wise Cousins was deep in post- production but the crew was running out of steam.
